Bridge Design
Fehily Timoney Gifford has designed and supervised the construction of over 60 complete bridges in Ireland and is currently designing a further 50 plus bridges.
We have acted as Client’s Engineer on road and bridge projects involving multiple bridges and single bridge contracts, as well as acting as Contractor’s Designer on design and build (D&B) road and bridge projects.
FTG has won awards for both D&B and traditionally procured bridges such as Cathaleen’s Falls in Donegal (overall winner Irish Concrete Society Awards 2007) and the Sarsfield Road Bridge in Cork.
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has now received more than 20 separate awards.
Company Experience
Fehily Timoney Gifford has been one of the leading design consultants in the Irish road market since 1999. The company has been involved in the design and construction of over 90km of roadworks on new National Routes in Ireland in the counties of Donegal, Wexford, Kildare, South Tipperary, Limerick and Cork. In addition we have carried out smaller projects such as junction design and assessments, feasibility studies, traffic studies, constraints reports and route selections.

Highway & Road Design
Fehily Timoney Gifford can offer experience and expertise through all stages of road scheme implementation; from scheme identification, through planning, preliminary design, detailed design and contract documentation, to supervision of the works on site. Our specialists can also provide alternative route proposals, economic and environmental impact assessments, traffic and accident and geotechnical desk study reports. This applies equally from large motorway schemes to small road improvements in both urban and rural environments.
All schemes are subjected to close economic scrutiny to justify their selection as an appropriate use for public money. There is a need for identification and consideration of all options (including those which may at first sight seem radical). This process may well require the input of other specialist sub-consultants experienced in the economics of other sectors such as freight movements, inter-modal services etc. We are used to working with such specialists and can introduce them to the team if necessary.
FTG has an experienced highway design section, encompassing all aspects of alignment, pavement and drainage design and associated works. Our engineering expertise covers both design for ‘greenfield’ sites and online improvements to existing highways - the latter requiring an understanding of the impact of construction on traffic management issues and the need to minimise disruption for road users. Additionally, our specialist survey section has carried out topographical and control proof surveys on several large Highways Agency projects.
Our engineers have completed the design and supervision of over 90km of new National Routes, and are currently engaged in the detailed design of a further 70km.
- We have prepared detailed designs for numerous projects of varying scale, from €1m to €100m in value.
- We possess the full range of disciplines and experience in-house to deliver projects from feasibility stage through to detailed design, production of contract documents and contract administration.
- Our staff are fully conversant with NRA Project Management Guidelines, Environmental Assessment and Construction Guidelines as well as the NRA DMRB and MCDRW.
Relevant FTG Road Projects include:
- Cork Northern Ring Road (Current)
- R407 Sallins Bypass, Kildare (Current)
- Mersey Gateway Crossing (Current)
- N9/N10 Phases 3 and 4 (Current)
- N11 Gorey to Arklow Link (2007)

Public Consultation & Route Selection
FTG is currently engaged in carrying out Route Selections for the Cork Northern Relief Road on behalf of Cork City and County Councils and the R407 Sallins Bypass on behalf of Kildare County Council. Due to the difficult physical and planning constraints involved, both these projects challenge us to provide the highest standards in both technical and public relations skills.
FTG staff have also been involved in the following projects in Ireland during planning and CPO stages:
- N25 Kilmacthomas Realignment
- N11 Gorey to Arklow Link
- N25 Waterford City Bypass
- N4 McNeads Bridge to Kinnegad
- N30 Moneytucker to New Ross Scheme
- N24 Western Corridor Improvement
- N72 Mallow Northern Relief Road
- Wicklow Port Access and Town Relief Road
Many of our staff have provided evidence at Oral Hearings throughout the country in relation to engineering and environmental matters.
River & Rail Crossings
Experienced at building and maintaining strong relationships with the various third parties affected by road crossings, FTG has excellent links with Iarnród Eireann, OPW, Fisheries Boards and Waterways Ireland.
FTG achieved TA1 approval for rail crossings on the N11 Gorey to Arklow Link within six months of commencing the detailed design. This required coordinating a high level of communication with IE and the contractor as well as delivering information accurately and on time. As a result we have been engaged to carry out a similar role for the N7 Limerick Nenagh Bypass.
On the M8 Rathcormac Fermoy PPP scheme, FTG also liaised with the OPW and the Fisheries Board with regard to the River Blackwater crossing. Our involvement led to significant value engineering and program savings for our client.
Road/Bridge Planning & Statutory Procedures
Our recent Planning Stage schemes include:
- N72 Mallow Northern Relief Road, Cork
- Cork Northern Relief Road
- R407 Sallins Bypass, Kildare
